The Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

The Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Parable of the Pearl of Great Value

MATTHEW 13:44–46

44“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

Two of the parables that Jesus told about the kingdom of heaven were the parable of the hidden treasure and the parable of the pearl of great value. The kingdom of God, or the “kingdom of heaven,” includes God’s rule in heaven and earth, where Jesus reigns as King. In these parables, He gives both a picture of the value of the kingdom and what His kingdom values.

APPLICATION
• Why do you think Jesus used these parables to describe the kingdom? How much does He value you, and how should this affect how you live?

• What are some practical ways you can show others the value of God’s kingdom? Which of these can you immediately do this week?

• In view of the value of God’s kingdom and the sacrifice Christ paid to make a way for people to enter His kingdom, what are you willing to sacrifice in order to help advance God’s kingdom in our nation? What are you willing to change so your life will be an expression of God’s kingdom?
